The kinetics and mechanisms of the oxidation of 2-mercaptoacetic acid (RSH) by the binuclear complex enH2[(FeHEDTA)2O].6H2O have been studied spectrophotometrically at 475 nm. At 28.0 ± 0.1oC and I=1.0mol/dm3 (NaClO4), the oxidation is first order in both the reductant and oxidant concentrations. Added anions, SO42- and NO3-, did not affect the rate of the RSH-[(FeHEDTA)2O] reaction. The results have been rationalized in terms of plausible outer-sphere electron transfer mechanism.
