Abstract

The kinetics of the titled reaction in aqueous solution of perchloric acid was monitored spectrophotomerically at ionic strength of I = 2.0M (NaClO4). The reaction obeys the rate law: Rate = 2k
 [Fe(LL)33+][H3PO2] where k = 1.83 x 10-4 dm3 mol-1s-1 and 1.13 x 10-4 dm3 mol-1s-1 at 25.0 +0.1oC for the
reaction with LL = 1,10-phenanthroline and 2,2’-bipyridine respectively. [H+] varied in the range 0.6
2.0 M had no effect on the rate. Plausible reaction steps have been suggested.
